Lucy Browne – Following in family footsteps
Mon, 11th May 2015, 8:09 PM
We spent 10 days in Sikkim with Alister of Nature Himalaya in April 2015. Our plan was to retrace some of the footsteps of our great grandfather Sir Joseph Hooker who had botanised extensively in the area in 1848-50. We couldn’t have chosen a better guide. It transpired that Alister actually knew more about our ancestor than we did and was able to take us to visit many historic sites mentioned in Hooker’s Himalayan Journals. We were even able to compare Hooker’s sketches with the mountain views today. Amazing! With Alister’s help we planned a itinerary that suited us perfectly and then Alister took care of everything else. He seemed to know our needs and preferences exactly. We had plenty of time for botanising, expertly guided by Alister who never tired of finding rare species for us and answered all of our – endless – questions. Although we did have a schedule to keep to, Alister always encouraged us to take our time, so we never felt rushed. Instead, we pottered and were able to relax into the Sikkim way of life. We stayed in hotels and guesthouses full of character and met some wonderful people. Alister’s easy manner seemed to open many doors for us. We ate some 5 star food but also plenty of hot black tea and noodles in tiny wayside huts. And the views were quite spectacular of course! The drivers were friendly and we felt totally safe, even thought the roads were somewhat challenging by western standards. I couldn’t recommend Nature Himalaya highly enough. Alister was more of a friend to us than a tour guide and I really hope we will be able to spend more time in his company in the future.

Alister provided great leadership on a botanical tour for Betchart Expeditions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim in April and May, 2012. The flora (rhododendrons, primroses, orchids, jack-in-the-pulpits, ferns, and much more) and landscapes were spectacular, and the tour was capably handled and guided by Alister and his assistant Biswas–both of whom are extremely knowledgeable of the region’s natural history–from beginning to end. I highly recommend the tour for individuals and groups interested in the botany, landscapes, and culture of the Hiamalayan region of northeast India.

Springtime 2009 I spent more than a week together with Alister in norhtern Sikhim. He show us the most fantastic places in the Himalayas. He also had good knowledge in Tibetian culture and botanic in the area. Alister is also a very humble and pleasant person to be with. We hope to see him again! / Per Claesson, Sweden.

We spent 3 amazing weeks with Alister as our guide in the foothills of the Himalayas.
We are not experienced independant travellers, and would never have considered going to India on our own.
Alister was just wonderful, planning and arranging everything before our arrival. He wanted to know what we would like to see and do in order to prepare a suitable itinerary. This agreed,we did not need to worry about anything. He met us as we arrived at the airport and took care of everything for us for 21 days.
He anticipated all our needs and requirements. A charming, helpful, knowledgeable young man.( from advising us what to eat, how it was prepared,to local customs and traditions, history and the flora) Nothing was too much trouble. We were able to stop and botanise, enjoy the views or walk as we wished.
We felt we saw the real Sikkim, stunning scenery, delightful friendly local people. Alister had a very natural manner, getting on with everyone, which allowed us to talk to them and understand more of their lives, growing their food and keeping animals..
Hotels were always among the best the area had to offer. All were on suite and clean with friendly helpful staff. Some were just AMAZING. Wow!
Food . We ate all the local cuisine and loved it all. Tasty and flavourful but not hot.
Our passion was for the trees and plants of the area, all so new to us.Alister shared this love as well and was keen to show us as much as possible.

We had the most wonderful trip through the hills of West Bengal and through Sikkim with Alister of Nature Himalaya. Transport, accomodations in unique and interesting boutique hotels and inns, and meals were all arranged leaving us with no worries or hassles. Alister’s knowledge of local customs, culture, and particularly the botany was extensive and so appreciated. We had lots of opportunities to make unscheduled hikes, nature walks, and even walks through villages. I would repeat this holiday at a moment’s notice and would recommend Alister and Nature Himalaya to any interested traveller to this region.
