Flowers Of Sikkim – Darjeeling Himalaya Spring 2015

This is a collection of pictures of the many plants we came across while conducting separate tours in the Himalayan Highlands of Sikkim and Darjeeling. We were at the Singalila Range in West Bengal and the Lachung and Lachen valley of North Sikkim.

These are the same areas where the famous Naturalist and Traveller Sir J. D. Hooker had spent time during the mid 1800’s collecting and classifying plants and discovered several new species.

Cardiocrinum giganteum

Sikkim – Darjeeling Himalaya, ISU Group Botanical Tour, Late June – Early July 2012.

It is a time when the monsoon is setting in. The group members were geared up and were mentally prepared to to face the bad weather. But to our surprise, and according to Sir J. D. Hookers observations mentioned in his journal, there was very less rain in the higher elevations as compared to down in the lower valleys. Much of the soil was dry and we could sit on the ground without getting our pants wet.

I have explored these areas in spring as well as in autumn, but never had I seen so many alpine flowers in bloom. The valleys and the mountain slopes had come to life with every patch resembling a carefully arranged rock garden.
